Another benefit to covering each piece individually is that the smaller covers can be handled by one person. Very large patio furniture covers are designed to protect the entire table and chair set, but this might not be the best solution in high-wind areas or where one person must maneuver the cover.

The covers are made of various water-resistant materials and will have numerous tie-down cords that are designed to prevent removal by the wind. When the covers are used faithfully, patio furniture tables and chairs will last for years.

When shopping for covers, compare the quality of the materials, seams and tie-down cords. Very inexpensive covers will rip easily, and the fabric will split when exposed to sunshine. Cheap covers will require replacement within two years.

High-quality covers are constructed well and will withstand extreme hot and cold temperatures without the fabric developing splits. Patio furniture covers must fit each table and chair so that the wind will not catch the cover and pull the furniture over. When glass-topped tables are overturned by the wind, the tops can be broken by the fall.

Patio furniture sets that are shaded and protected from the rain most of the time will have a prolonged life when covers are used consistently. The amount of moisture that penetrates the cushions will be reduced by the covers.
